Gairlochy

Gairlochy is a clachan, or hamlet, with a population of approx. 100. It lies on the southern shores of Loch Lochy, a large freshwater loch in the district of Lochaber in the North West Highlands of Scotland. Gairlochy is surrounded by several other small crofting settlements, the largest of which is Achnacarry.

The area has great views of Ben Nevis and the Grey Corries and an extensive beech forest provides delightful walking and cycling paths. The Great Glen Way passes nearby. The Clan Cameron Museum at Achnacarry is about 4 miles from Gairlochy, and well worth a visit. Don't miss a visit to the Eas Chia-aig waterfall by  Loch Arkaig - a huge inland fresh-water loch.

Spean Bridge

The small and attractive village of Spean Bridge is located at the southern end of the Great Glen and is best known for its iconic Commando Memorial.

Promoted as ‘the crossroads of the Highlands’, the village offers an ideal touring base as it stands at the junction of roads north to Inverness and the Isle of Skye, south to Fort William and east through Glen Spean towards Loch Laggan and Strathspey.

Around a mile west of the village is the famous Commando Memorial and panoramic viewpoint. Erected in 1952, it commemorates the elite soldiers who fell during the Second World War and who gained their Green Berets at the Commandos Basic Training Centre in nearby Achnacarry. A Commando exhibition at the Spean Bridge Hotel explains the story.
